Adopting a “Waiting Child”

Adopting A “Waiting Child”

IMG_1452(1)If you have read my “about me” section then you know that I was a Houseparent working with 9 at-risk youth prior to working in the international adoption world. Those children’s ages ranged between 13-18. Before my role as a Houseparent, I worked at a residential treatment center with 30 girls who were between the ages of 14-17. With all of this being said, I have had my fair share of interaction with older children in the foster care system and who are labeled in the international adoption world as “waiting children.” Many days I come to work and this is a hard topic for me. Of course I want EVERY child to find their forever family and in a perfect world the term “orphan” would not exist. But, the reason this is a hard topic for me is because unfortunately a lot of families are only open to adopting younger children. There is a huge stigma that older children will not be as resilient or they will not form attachment, or that the bond just won’t be the same. Now, a lot of this can be considered true, but not just for older children but younger children as well. A younger child may not remember a lot of the past, and yes they may adapt easily in the beginning, but do you know how long the “waiting children” have longed for a forever family? Because I have worked with older children in the system I know the struggles and man can they be hard, but I also know how great the rewards are of breaking down those walls and bonding with a child who has longed for that feeling their entire life (whether they knew that they wanted that relationship or not). Will it be easy? Not always. Will it be worth it? It always was for me! “Waiting Children” constantly see adoptive parents coming to creches and taking children home and wonder if anyone will ever come for them. This is a sad and unfortunate reality. A lot of these older children eventually are even seen as caretakers to the younger children and their whole idea of what a childhood should be is quickly diminished.

While I was in Haiti, I met ALL of the children at the creches I visited and they are ALL incredible! But, there are a few “waiting child” sibling groups I met that really stood out to me and I would love more than anything to help advocate to find them a forever family. Bulgarian Sisters Need a Family!

Bulgaria (4)

“Adopting one child won’t change the world, but for that one child the whole world will change.”

Could you imagine, as a young girl, leaving your home with your little sister and reporting your family to social services? Unfortunately, for many children this is a common theme, and one pair of our siblings experienced this scenario first hand. Autumn and Audrey are healthy sisters living in Bulgaria who were not dealt the best hand in the earlier years of their lives. Even with the ups and downs that they have experienced, both girls are extremely resilient and are looking forward to finding a safe and loving forever family. They are 12 and 15 years old and love the outdoors, playing volleyball, and of course spending time together. They are both doing wonderful in school and all of their social workers and teachers have nothing but positive things to say about them. These two amazing girls need a family, if you or someone you know is interested in learning how you can be matched with them, please contact our Bulgaria Matching specialist, Hilary, at hilary@childrenofallnations.com today! Even if you are not able to adopt these girls yourself please help us advocate for them by sharing their information!

Due to the privacy policies in place for our Bulgarian Adoption program, we are unable to share a photo of Autumn and Audrey on our blog. If you are interested in seeing a photo of these beautiful girls or learning more about them, visit our Waiting Child photo listing, or join our private Facebook group today!

Alvin Needs a Forever Family!

Meet Alvin!

Every child deserves a home and a family to call their own, and today sweet little Alvin is heavy on our hearts. This happy two year old was diagnosed with infantile cerebral palsy, but he doesn’t let that get him down! He’s able to crawl, walk with a baby walker, and he loves physical activities. His caretakers say that he’s constantly smiling, babbling, and playing with his toys! He can respond to his name, and he’s currently working on drinking from cups and using silverware.  All of the doctors that have met with Alvin in Bulgaria have given him a very optimistic prognosis, and the social workers in country believe that once he is with his forever family he will continue to thrive and develop.

Could you be Alvin’s forever family? Contact us at CAN today to learn more about him, or visit our CAN Waiting Child Photo Listing to see his photo!

What is the Bulgaria Waiting Child program?

Our Bulgaria adoption program has both a “Regular Track” and a “Waiting Child Track.” While families who choose to adopt through the regular track wait to receive a referral for a medically healthy child, families who are interested in adopting a Waiting Child can submit their documents be matched with a specific kiddo from our Waiting Child listing at any point in the process. Each month, the CAN’s Matching Specialists receive files for new Waiting Children. These kiddos are often considered more difficult to place based on their age, the fact that they have some degree of “special need,” or the fact that they’re part of a sibling group. Since documents for these children can be submitted right away, the adoption process for the Waiting Child Track is typically much quicker.

The Perks of Adopting Older TwinsBulgaria

Adoption, in general, is a life changing decision which takes a great deal of consideration.  Many families feel that adoption is something they have been called to pursue, as they consider the child (or children) that they are bringing into their family to be the missing piece to their puzzle. While many families initially look into adopting a younger child, there are many older children or sibling sets who are in need of families as well. Many of these children have been in an orphanage or a foster home since they were very young. They have never had the chance to come home from school to a “real” mom and dad. They do not know the feeling of being tucked in at night, or sitting down to a family dinner and talking about their day.

While we receive sibling sets of Waiting Children for many of our international adoption programs, we have recently seen more and more sets of twins from our Bulgaria adoption program. Many parents will tell you that having twins is the greatest blessing in their lives and that having twins is a journey filled with unexpected bonuses. With twins, you get to see something incredible, which is the special bond that they share. Twins have known each other before anyone else ever knew them. When twins are placed into an orphanage they quickly learn that their survival tactic is to take care of each other just like they did in the womb. Typically, one twin becomes a little more dominant insuring that they are both always taken care of. Their twin relationship is taken to another level because they can always depend on one another.

Wouldn’t you like to be the family that tucks them in at night, and loves and cares for them so that they know they can depend on you too? If you’re interested in learning more about our dynamic duos, contact Children of All Nations, or ask to join our Bulgaria Waiting Child Facebook group today!
